Yes, but my experiences with professors and doctors in an academic sphere is that when they are teaching, they usually prefer professor.  It makes it simpler for the students and tells their job not their level of education.  Usually the professors that insist they are called doctors are the ones that are kind of pretentious, which Layton is not.  In my opinion, he has a PhD (I think he would need one for that level of archaeological research, plus I always assumed that when Clark and Layton studied together, it was graduate school (maybe that’s just me)), but he is humble enough that everyone just calls him professor (because that is his job title).

  9. tea-eyes said: desmond is hakase in japanese as oppose to kyouju, which is what layotn is. and yeah, it’s closer to “academic” doctor than “professor”. but rather than knowing more than layton, i think it has more to do with teaching cuz layton works at uni
